How to Use the High School GPA Calculator

Whether you’re tracking your grades for a single semester or your entire high school career, our GPA calculator makes the process quick and straightforward. Follow the steps below to calculate your GPA accurately.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Enter Your Class Name

Start by entering the name of each class or a short abbreviation. This helps you keep your courses organized and makes it easier to review your results later.

2. Select Your Grade

Choose the letter grade you earned in the class from the dropdown menu. If you only have a percentage grade, use a GPA conversion chart to find the equivalent letter grade.

3. Enter Class Credits

Input the number of credits assigned to the class. Most high school courses are worth one credit, although some classes may carry a different credit value.

4. Choose a Course Weight (Optional)

By default, all classes are treated as unweighted. If you’re enrolled in Honors, AP, IB, or other advanced courses, select the appropriate weighting option to reflect the additional grade points earned.

5. Add More Classes (Optional)

Click “Add Class” to enter additional courses for the same semester. Repeat the previous steps for each class you want to include.

6. Add Another Semester (Optional)

Use the “Add Semester” button to record grades from multiple terms. Continue adding semesters to calculate your cumulative high school GPA.

Understanding Weighted and Unweighted GPA

High schools commonly use either a weighted or unweighted GPA system. While the grading scales may differ, the basic GPA calculation follows the same principle:

Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits = GPA

Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats all classes equally, regardless of difficulty. Typically, an A equals 4.0 points, a B equals 3.0 points, and so on.

Weighted GPA

A weighted GPA gives additional value to advanced courses such as Honors, AP, or IB classes. Because these courses are more challenging, they can increase your overall GPA beyond the standard 4.0 scale.

Track Your Academic Progress

By recording all of your classes and semesters, you can monitor your academic performance throughout high school, identify trends in your grades, and better prepare for college applications. Update your GPA regularly to stay informed about your progress and future academic goals.
